It appears the fire sale the Chicago Cubs had at the MLB Trade Deadline is just the beginning of the drama that is set to unfold.

On Monday, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer appeared on Chicago's ESPN1000 to voice his own frustrations with not being able to get Anthony Rizzo, Javy Baez, and Kris Bryant to sign extensions.

“The extensions we offered these guys will hold up exceptionally well…against the open market…I don’t know why guys didn’t want to sign.I don’t know why guys didn’t want to even counteroffer, often times. Every one of these guys would say they wanted to stay in Chicago, ‘we wanted to be a Cub,’ but then we would sit down and do negotiations, that wasn’t how they acted.”

On Tuesday now former Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who was one of the core players who was traded, responded.

Hoyer's comments did come off as a bit bizarre regardless of if they held any truth or not. The reality of the situation is that Cubs owner Tom Ricketts didn't want to fork over the money to keep building on what they already had in place. Hoyer seemed to pile on and shift a lot of the blame towards the players.

It's not a great sign for the Cubs and any potential free agents that may want to head to the north side in coming seasons. The optics of it just look bad. Rizzo firing back is just the cherry on top. And he has a point, the Cubs' front office just sounds petty right now.
