The Chicago Cubs are coming off of a disappointing season that saw them miss the playoffs completely. Now, they are headed in a new direction after moving on from manager Joe Maddon and hiring David Ross to replace him. Theo Epstein could be looking to make some major changes this offseason.

One of those changes could come in the rotation. Cole Hamels will not be back with the Cubs and the team could also look to move Jose Quintana in a trade to acquire more young talent. That could lead them to pursue a star pitcher in free agency.

Last offseason, the Cubs didn't have much money to play around with. If Quintana ends up getting moved, the franchise will open up some room to make moves. Hamels coming off the books will be a big step towards being able to make another move as well.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Cubs could come into play when it comes to the free agency of star pitcher Stephen Strasburg this offseason.

Strasburg would be a massive addition if the Cubs are able to get him. There are going to be a ton of teams lined up with interest and big money for him, but Chicago is always an intriguing landing spot for free agents.

He is coming off of a season where he went 18-6 with the Washington Nationals to go along with a 3.32 ERA and 251 strikeouts. Strasburg also played a huge role in the World Series run, going 5-0 in postseason play and recording a 1.98 ERA. Washington will do everything they can to bring him back, but that is not a guarantee.

Expect to see the Cubs look into some big names this offseason. They may not end up landing any of them, but Epstein and company are going to try to make moves to put Chicago back into World Series contention. Strasburg would definitely be one of those moves.
