The defending champions Los Angeles Dodgers did not exactly kick off their title defense in the best way possible as they took on the Colorado Rockies on opening night.

The third inning featured a pretty inexplicable play courtesy of Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner, which is the type of sequence that you just have to see to try and comprehend (h/t Blake Harris on Twitter):

With the game tied at 0-0, Cody Bellinger hit one just beyond the left-field wall which at that point, should have been a two-run home run. Teammate Justin Turner was in first but in a rather strange turn of events, Turner decided to run back to first as the ball flew out. It looks like Turner thought that Rockies outfielder Ramiel Tapia made a sensational catch, which actually was almost the case.

You can clearly see Bellinger trying to stop Turner on his tracks, but unfortunately, the latter was too intent on getting back to first to avoid being tagged out. This resulted in Bellinger being ruled out himself because he passed his teammate on the basepaths. Upon realizing his error, Turner paced around the bases to open the scoring for the Dodgers.

The opening day of the new campaign already took a significant hit with the Mets-Nationals game being suspended due to COVID-19 protocols, and if this bizarre play from the Dodgers is another sign of things to come, then we're definitely in store for a long and arduous season ahead.
