This is about as deflating of a way to start the season, or not start it, as one could imagine. The Opening Day tilt between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues. There will be no game on Friday either, per ESPN's Buster Olney.

It's the Nationals dealing with COVID-19 issues. Washington had a positive test on Wednesday, and ESPN's Jeff Passan reports there are concerns about another positive.

With Opening Day set up on a pedestal for Thursday, MLB was hoping to get things off on the right foot after an unorthodox 2020 season. The COVID-19 postponement for the Mets-Nationals game is a sign that we aren't quite in the clear yet in the world of sports with this virus.

The Mets enter the 2021 season with lofty expectations set in place after a big offseason that featured them acquiring superstar Francisco Lindor (he just signed a massive extension), starter Carlos Carrasco, and others. New York expects to be right in the mix in the National League East thanks to the legitimate talent in place under the direction of new ownership.

The Nationals will look to bounce back in 2021. After winning the World Series two years ago, Washington spiraled out of the mix last year due to plenty of injuries that piled up.

With a rotation this year that features Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Patrick Corbin and now Jon Lester, Washington will aim towars mowing teams down with the rotation while also having MVP candidate Juan Soto lead the charge in the batting lineup.

The two will have to wait to get the regular season going after the COVID-19 related postponement. Let's all hope it's an outlier in what should be an otherwise enjoyable Opening Day across MLB, though the Boston Red Sox had their opener against the Baltimore Orioles also postponed due to weather.
