Dustin Poirier was born in Lafayette, Louisiana where he attended Northside High School before dropping out in the 9th grade as he was repeatedly getting into trouble and street fights.

In 2009, Poirier made his professional MMA debut against Aaron Suarez at USA MMA 7: River City Rampage. He won the fight via KO in the 1st round.

He won his first seven MMA fights across different promotions such as USA MMA, Cajun FC, Bang FC, and Ringside MMA.

He then signed with World Extreme Cagefighting where he made his debut match in 2010 against Danny Castillo at WEC 50.
