World no. 3 Alexander Zverev retired in his French Open semi-final showdown with Rafael Nadal after suffering a concerning ankle injury. Naturally, the King of Clay is concerned about his condition.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the French Open final, Nadal shared his hope that Zverev's injury is not severe and it is just the usual twisting of ankle that he can easily recover from. The German international slid and twisted his right ankle late in the second set of their match, forcing him to be pushed off the court via wheelchair before eventually retiring.

Nadal also highlighted that it was not how he wanted to make it to the final of Roland Garros, emphasizing that he feels “very sorry” for Zverev for the unfortunate accident.

“It's very tough, very sad for him. He was playing an unbelievable tournament, and I know he was fighting to win a grand slam. I'm sure he will win more than one and I wish him all the best,” Nadal shared, via Yahoo Sports.

“Only thing that I can say is I hope he’s not too bad. Hopefully it’s just the normal thing when you turn your ankle, and hopefully nothing (is broken). That’s what everybody hopes.”

For what it's worth, in a message to fans following his injury in the French Open, Alexander Zverev revealed that there are fears his ankle issue could be “very serious.” His doctors and medical team will still conduct tests to determine the extent of the problem, but so far, there has been no update.

As Rafael Nadal said, here's to hoping that nothing is broken in his foot and that he'll be able to return sooner rather than later.
