Tennis superstar Alexander Zverev suffered an ugly ankle injury on Thursday during his French Open semi-finals showdown with Rafael Nadal, and the current outlook on the issue doesn't seem good.

Late in the second set of the match, Zverev accidentally slid and twisted his right ankle. He writhed in pain on the clay court before he was taken off via wheelchair. Nadal was eventually declared the winner, with the German player being forced to withdraw.

Speaking after his heartbreaking exit, Zverev admitted that his injury looked “very serious,” though he still has to get it checked to determine the extent of the issue.

“Very difficult moment for me today on the court, obviously a fantastic match until what happened,” Zverev said in a video shared by French Open Twitter account, via Reuters. “Looks like I have a very serious injury, but the medical team and the doctors are still checking on it and we'll keep you updated, we'll let you know as soon as we know more.”

Alexander Zverev is the world no. 3 in the ATP rankings, and there were high hopes he could reach the Roland Garros final or even give Rafael Nadal a run for his money. It was just really unfortunate that he suffered the injury and get denied a shot at another Grand Slam in the French Open.

It remains to be seen how long Zverev will be out, but here's to hoping that the issue is not as severe as it initially looked.
