The New York Giants own the sixth overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft next month, and the general consensus is that the Giants will take a quarterback at that spot.

After all, Eli Manning is 38 years old, clearly on the decline and is entering the final year of his deal.

But Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is attempting to play it coy, merely saying that New York wants the best player on the board when its pick comes up in April, according to Kimberly Jones of NFL Network. Shurmur added if that player happens to fill a need, that would be “ideal.”

While Shurmur made that statement, he also said that the Giants would like to find a successor to Manning “sooner rather than later” and that he would like that young quarterback to learn under Manning for a year.

Considering Manning is likely going into his final season with New York, it only makes sense for the Giants to take a quarterback at No. 6, so if Shurmur is trying to throw other teams off the trail by saying they will take the best player available, he isn't doing a very good job.

Something to keep in mind is that New York has a pair of first-round draft picks, as it also nabbed the 17th overall selection in the trade that sent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.

Theoretically, the Giants could take a defensive player at the sixth pack and then try to grab a signal-caller at No. 17, but I'm not sure New York would be willing to take that risk.
