The San Francisco Giants were recently dealt a devastating blow as it was recently announced that third baseman Evan Longoria will require finger surgery, per Bob Nightengale. There is no current timetable for his return.

Longoria is a three-time All-Star who was a key cog in the ignition during the Giants’ 2021 season that saw them lead the entire MLB in wins despite dealing with injuries. Although he does not possess the same talent that he did during his prime, the 36-year old veteran is a steady presence in the lineup and at the hot corner.

Even though he was limited last year due to the aforementioned injuries, Evan Longoria was effective during his time on the field. He finished the season with a .261/.351/.482 line along with an .833 OPS. He also clubbed 13 home runs and drove in 46 runs over the course of just 81 games. San Francisco was counting on him to play an even greater role this year after the team lost Kris Bryant in free agency

And he still very well could end up being a vital piece to the puzzle. But his uncertain status will be enough to make Giants fans concerned.

The Giants already have players dealing with various ailments as well. Both Brandon Belt and LaMonte Wade Jr. are questionable for the beginning of the season with injuries of their own.

As for the third base conversation, the Giants will likely implement a mixture of Wilmer Flores and Tommy La Stella. Thairo Estrada could also see playing time at the position.

The Giants will look to overcome their injury-plagued roster and post another successful season in 2022.
