After the Miami Heat's Game 4 loss in the NBA Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers, basketball legend Kevin McHale shared what he believes the Erik Spoelstra-coached team needs to win an NBA title. According to him, the Heat need a star who is a threat on his own.

McHale shared his thoughts after the Heat went down 3-1 in the NBA Finals against the powerhouse Lakers squad. From his observation, the Heat don't have a star who can score on his own and collapse the defense.

“When you watch Miami play, they don’t have a guy you can give it to and say ‘Here, this is the ball. You’re at your spot and go get us a hoop’ [where] the defense knows that’s his spot and they have to double-team him there,” McHale said after Game 4, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

McHale noted that every championship team has this type of player. He believes that a player who can generate his own shots is one of the keys in a series against a team that plays excellent defense.

“They sometimes have to have five or six different actions to get a decent shot in this series in one possession. All good championships teams have that guy you can give it to on his spot on the floor… Everybody had a player you can go to. Miami doesn’t have that. They’ve got to generate offense with so much motion. It’s hard to generate good shots against good playoff defense especially after three or four games in a row. They don’t have that guy. Jimmy Butler can’t do this against AD.”

It's a fine point raised by McHale. But the Heat have to work with what they're given now. Perhaps in the offseason, the Heat front office might entertain McHale's advice.

Game 5 of the NBA Finals will be on Friday. The Lakers, who are up 3-1, have a chance to close out the series.
