New York Knicks guard Frank Ntilikina missed nearly two months due to a groin strain, making his way back onto the floor March 20. In just his second game back Sunday versus the Los Angeles Clippers, Ntilikina aggravated the injury again, which led Knicks head coach David Fizdale to say this concerning his status moving forward, per Marc Berman of the New York Post.

“We don’t know yet on the status of how far away he is from coming back. I know it was a tough blow to the kid the other night. I just don’t know how severe it is. I just know that it got to a point during the game where it was really bothering him. It’s just been frustrating for the kid. It’s been frustrating for all of us, but for him it’s been tough.”

Ntilikina has been limited to just 43 games (16 starts) during his second NBA campaign, averaging 5.7 points, 2.8 assists and 2.0 rebounds across 21 minutes per contest. The Knicks had attempted to insert him into the starting five prior to his injury, but the landscape has changed around him since then.

When the Knicks selected Ntilikina with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, it was with an eye towards making him their future starting point guard. Now the man that they passed on — Dennis Smith Jr. — in favor of Ntilikina, has surpassed him on the depth chart following a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. The youngster is still just 20 years old, but has been unable to take the floor for nearly half the year with the Knicks and may be looking at a 2019-20 return date if he can't heal up in the next few days.
