Having had the opportunity to play alongside him earlier this season with the New York Knicks, Enes Kanter understands better than others how good his fellow big man, Willy Hernangomez, is. On Saturday, the two were able to compete against each other, as the Knicks faced off against the Charlotte Hornets, giving the Turkish international a chance to share the court again with his former teammate.

Kanter then gave the 23-year-old Spaniard the highest of compliments, comparing him to one of the best centers in the NBA today. He said, via Barbara Barker of Newsday, that Hernangomez has the potential to be as good as Marc Gasol. In fact, Kanter already thinks that the Hornets big man is already a younger version of Gasol.

Gasol is an NBA veteran who has had a very successful career at the highest level. He has been named an All-Star three times, won the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2013, and continues to play well for the Memphis Grizzlies despite already being in his 10th season now. He owns impressive career averages of 15.2 points,7.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.3 blocks.

Hernangomez may still have a long way to go before even getting close to what Gasol has done in his career, but if he continues working hard and developing his game, he could definitely live up to expectations. Kanter could appear to be a genius if Hernangomez does follow Gasol’s footsteps, but he may also carve his own path, and establish himself as a rising star in the NBA.
