The New York Knicks are making their intentions for 2022 NBA free agency as clear as day. They want to sign Jalen Brunson to a big contract and have him be their leading guard moving forward. In the event that Brunson stays with the Dallas Mavericks, the Knicks could go a different route by trading for Dejounte Murray, though there's apparently also the possibility of trying to add both players.

As reported by NBA insider Marc Stein, the Knicks could look into Murray (or another star) as a trade option using all the picks they received from their trades at the NBA Draft. They could make this move to surround Brunson with another solid player or do it in place of signing him:

It’s believed that the Knicks could pivot to trying to make a run at San Antonio's Dejounte Murray via trade or another target of Murray’s caliber using the many draft picks they’ve stockpiled even if Rose, as increasingly expected, secures Brunson's signature.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Knicks are gauging interest in Evan Fournier and Cam Reddish, which could help them obtain Murray. However, he also reports that a Murray-Brunson tandem may clash with the recruiting pitch Brunson received from New York:

On Tuesday night, Dejounte Murray started to be mentioned by league personnel as the next New York target alongside Brunson, as first reported by Marc Stein. However, that would seem to run counterintuitive to the Knicks' pitch of Brunson running his own team.

Murray made his first All-Star Game and averaged 21.1 points, 9.2 assists, 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game last season. Pairing him with Brunson, who averaged 16.3 points and 4.8 assists last season, would give the Knicks a very good backcourt to build with.

The San Antonio Spurs are looking for a massive haul for Murray, with ongoing talks happening with the Atlanta Hawks.
