ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst says Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving “has had discussions with people” about playing for the Los Angeles Lakers next season.

Irving becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer once he declines his 2019-20 player option with the Celtics. The Lakers have cap space to sign a max contract player like Irving this offseason.

After Irving revealed earlier in the season he called LeBron James to apologize for how he acted during their time together with the Cleveland Cavaliers, rumors about Irving and James reuniting in Los Angeles have gotten very loud:

“As time passes here, I would’ve said that this is impossible for many months,” Windhorst said on ESPN Radio, via Bryan Kalbrosky of Hoops Hype. “But as time passes here and as the possibility exists that Jason Kidd could be hired as the Lakers coach, I think the possibility of Kyrie and LeBron reuniting — that door, which was deadbolted, has been un-deadbolted and has now been cracked open.

“It might even be opening more by the day. And I say that just because I think it’s on Kyrie’s radar, it’s on Kyrie’s board. He has had discussions with people about playing for the Lakers.”

Irving and James were teammates on the Cavs for three seasons. They won the 2016 championship together over the Golden State Warriors in seven games.

The Lakers still need to hire a head coach after discussions with Tyronn Lue ended. Maybe LA reaches back out to Lue and offers him the five-year deal he wanted if they get intel that Irving wants to play for them.
