It’s been an unofficial tradition in the NBA to link any free agent superstar to the Los Angeles Lakers. This year is no different. LeBron James and Paul George, the top two players to hit the market are both heavily rumored to be donning Purple and Gold colors next season. Let’s also not forget about DeMarcus Cousins, who’s perceived as the best free agent big man. Needless to say, he, too, is being rumored to be targeted by Los Angeles.

That rumor flame was further fanned by a recent report that Boogie is going to Hollywood according to ex-Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin during a Sirius XM appearance.

Enter Bryan Kalbrosky of USA TODAY Sports, who wanted to put a little more context to what Griffin said.

Apparently, Griffin was put on the spot during the interview but the complete background of his statement was conveniently cropped out, likely with the intention of sprinkling his take with some drama.

Providing clarity to Griffin’s statement, however, does not change the fact that the Lakers are in need of a star. Cousins, for one, could give the team a superstar big man the Lakers haven’t had in a while. With Brook Lopez about to hit free agency also, the Lakers' center depth chart only has the pair of Ivica Zubac and Thomas Bryant sharing the role.

If the Lakers strike out on George and James, Cousins is not a bad consolation for the team.

Last season, Cousins averaged 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in 48 games, while missing plenty of contests due to an Achilles injury.
