Carmelo Anthony signing with the Los Angeles Lakers was one of the biggest storylines to come out of free agency in the offseason. Unsurprisingly, LeBron James had a hand in Melo's recruitment, which apparently, turned out to be the one thing that pushed Anthony towards agreeing to a deal with LA.
According to Anthony, LeBron just needed 13 words to convince him to join him in Hollywood:
“The time is now, we've got to make it happen. We want you,” LeBron told Melo, via Bill Oram of The Athletic.
Not everyone gets this type of special treatment from The King. Moreover, Anthony has been friends with LeBron for decades now, and given how their careers have run parallel to each other from the get-go, it only felt right that they eventually became teammates at some point. In his mind, Melo is adamant that that time has come:
“Timing is everything. For years we've always laughed about it and spoke about it,” Anthony added, via Ryan Ward of Lakers Nation. “The time is now for us to be on the same team. It couldn't have come at a better time.”
Carmelo Anthony is no longer the dominant scorer he once was. However, he can still catch fire at any given time, and this is exactly what LeBron and the Lakers expect from him this season. Melo has achieved so many things throughout his decorated career and right now, the one thing missing is a championship ring. Anthony might just get his wish next year.
