There's a reason LeBron James signed a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and not a short term deal like he's done in the past.

According to Shams Charania of The Atheltic, James knew it would be a process to build a contender in Los Angeles and that this season could be a struggle.

The Lakers are most likely going to miss the playoffs this season. LeBron has been to eight-straight NBA Finals entering this season and hasn't missed the postseason since his sophomore year in the NBA when he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This much is certain, though: James understood this would be a process entering the season and that it takes time to build a contender, sources said, and he’ll always remain a pro and play hard through it all.

The Lakers will have cap space this summer to sign a max contract player to pair alongside LeBron. The franchise will also try and acquire Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans again.

Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris and Klay Thompson are the notable stars who become free agents in the offseason. Durant and Irving have been linked to joining the New York Knicks together, while Leonard has been rumored to taking his talents to the other team in Los Angeles, the Clippers.

We'll see if the Lakers are able to get another superstar next to LeBron James this summer.
