Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will sit out their upcoming encounter against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, which serves as the second game of a back-to-back set. His impending absence will be the first time that he will miss action this season, thus breaking a streak of 36 straight games played with the Lakers in 2020-21, per The Athletic‘s Shams Charania.

The four-time MVP has been dealing with an ankle injury all season long. He has opted not to take games off to this point in order to give more to his team in this campaign, especially with Anthony Davis out of late due to this nagging injuries. James is currently averaging 25.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 34.6 minutes per game.

With his level of production, James is one of the top candidates for the ongoing MVP race alongside Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid and Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, among several other stars.

Despite James' absence against the Kings on Wednesday, Charania reported that it won't impact his appearance in the upcoming All-Star Game on March 7 in Atlanta.

LeBron James is expected to be back on the floor after the midseason festivities when the Lakers visit the Indiana Pacers on March 12. It's unclear when Davis is set to return, though the hope is it isn't too long after the All-Star break. The Lakers are currently seeking to climb up the standings as they are currently sitting in the third spot of the Western Conference with a 24-12 record.
