Former Los Angeles Lakers great Pau Gasol is going out on top.

On Tuesday, the 40-year old won another basketball title, as FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid, 92-73, at Palau Blaugrana to take the Liga Endesa — the 19th such title for the club, and first since 2013-14.

Barça captain Pierre Oriola specifically called Gasol over to lift the trophy during the on-court celebration.

On Monday, Gasol indicated that Game 2 of the ACB Finals could mark the end of his legendary career in professional basketball.

“This can be my last game,” he said, via EuroHoops. “I have been thinking for years that my last game could have been a long time ago due to the injuries. These thoughts have crossed my mind…I try to approach every game as if it is my last.”

Gasol re-joined FC Barcelona in February, where he began his pro hoops journey in 1998.

Pau won two Liga ACB championships before the Memphis Grizzlies made him the no. 3 overall pick in 2001. He earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2002 and went on to make six All-Star teams and win two rings (2009, 2010) alongside Kobe Bryant with the Lakers.

Gasol last played in the NBA in 2019, appearing in three games for the Milwaukee Bucks. Ahead of the 2020-21 season, buzz swirled that Pau could return to Los Angeles for one more go-round, especially after his brother, Marc, signed with the Lakers in November.

“Seriously considered? It’s not that I’ve had many opportunities,” Gasol told ClutchPoints in 2020 about an NBA comeback. “It’s something that has been on my mind. Kind of like the potential of maybe finishing or playing my last year with the Lakers would be great. It’s appealing if you will, but the opportunity never really kind of presented itself in a serious official manner.

“I have a great relationship and love for Jeanie and the Lakers organization and the city of Los Angeles, which is always going to remain extremely meaningful to me no matter what, but we’ll see. But not really.”

Gasol averaged 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in seven EuroLeague appearances for FC Barcelona. Barça lost to Anadolu Efes in the championship game.

In Liga ACB matches, Pau averaged 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds. He added eight points and eight boards in Game 1 vs. Real Madrid.

“He is much more than a teammate. He knows that. Everybody knows that. He is a brother to me,” Gasol's FCB teammate Nikola Mirotic said. “To see how he is playing and enjoying the games, it is incredible. He helps us on and off the court. He arrived at a key moment for us.”

Felicitats a Pau. Another notch on the Hall of Fame resume.
