It’s been a while since anyone’s thought of Lamar Odom doing well on a basketball court. His NBA career flamed out horribly after moving to the Dallas Mavericks in 2011-12, and then the Los Angeles Clippers in 2012-13. Eventually, everyone found out about his near-fatal substance abuse problems, which were a major reason for his precipitous decline.

But back in the day, Lamar Odom could play. And for anyone who forgot or was too young to remember, Odom gave them a good taste of his impressive skills in an Instagram video.

Odom came into the league in 1999 and became one of the trailblazers for a generation of big men with guard skills which we see with more regularity in the league these days. He never quite rose up to the superstar level which he was once touted for, but as his video showed, his skills were always undeniable.

Odom eventually found his perfect niche as the third star behind Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol for the Los Angeles Lakers. Odom’s versatility, especially in terms of his defense and passing, was instrumental in the Lakers winning those back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010.

It’s a pity Odom’s career ended the way it did, but at least he’s still alive and apparently doing well after what he went through. And he’ll always have those glorious Laker years, which are certainly worth reminding people about from time to time.
