The Detroit Lions have signed cornerback Desmond Trufant to a two-year, $21 million deal, according to Jordan Schultz of ESPN. The contract contains $14 million in guaranteed money.

Trufant spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons and is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he was limited to nine games due to a couple of different injuries, including a broken arm that ended his season in Week 14.

During the time Trufant was on the field this past year, he logged 18 tackles, four interceptions and seven passes defended.

He was released by the Falcons earlier this week.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Washington, was originally selected by Atlanta in the first round (22nd pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He played in all 16 games during his rookie season, finishing with 70 tackles, a couple of picks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 17 passes defended.

By Trufant's third year in the league, he was a Pro Bowler after racking up 42 tackles, an interception, a pair of fumble recoveries, 11 passes defended, and a defensive touchdown.

Then, in 2016, Trufant appeared in just nine contests due to injury, totaling 31 tackles, two sacks, a pick, and two forced fumbles. He came back healthy in 2017 and tallied 41 tackles, a sack, a couple of interceptions, three fumble recoveries, 12 passes defended, and a defensive score, and in 2018, he registered 66 tackles, a sack and 12 passes defended.

When healthy, Trufant is one of the better cover corners in the NFL, and along with fellow cornerback Darius Slay, he should help form a pretty tough secondary in Detroit.
