Orlando Magic big man Khem Birch is happy to play for Canada in the FIBA World Cup. After all, it's not everyday that he gets to work under a champion coach like Nick Nurse of the Toronto Raptors.

In an interview with Montreal Gazette's Mike Ganter, Birch said he is lucky that some players withdrew from the team which paved his way to get a starting role with the Canadian men's basketball team. For the 26-year-old forward/center, playing for Nurse is beneficial in his development.

“As you can see I’m doing things I have never done in the NBA that I’m getting to do right now,” Birch said referring to handling the ball and stepping outside to shoot. “That’s what a lot of guys don’t understand. Coach Nurse gives you the confidence and freedom to do whatever you want. Basically everything you want in the system you have here so I’m lucky.”

The Magic big man's description of Nurse is on-brand. He allowed his players to think for themselves during the Raptors' improbable but incredible championship run. He also wasn't hesitant to give the keys to Kawhi Leonard when the game was on the line.

Birch is an old-school big man who doesn't space the floor often. However, he provides energy and presence down low with his 6-foot-9 frame. The UNLV product — who went undrafted in 2014 — has averages of 4.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in his two seasons with the Magic so far.

Canada is already out of the FIBA World Cup, but Birch is certainly satisfied with the opportunity he got.
