In support of the Black Lives Movement that has sparked protests across the US, all Dallas Mavericks players will have the word “Equality”  on their jerseys.

The Mavs, who have several non-American players, will have “Equality” etched in their jersey in their native language.

The NBA has pre-approved 29 social justice statements that the players can etch of their jerseys and the Mavs are one of the many teams that will be taking part on the gesture. The approved words and phrases are:  Black Lives Matter; Say Their Names; Vote; I Can’t Breathe; Justice; Peace; Equality; Freedom; Enough; Power to the People; Justice Now; Say Her Name; Sí Se Puede (Yes We Can); Liberation; See Us; Hear Us; Respect Us; Love Us; Listen; Listen to Us; Stand Up; Ally; Anti-Racist; I Am A Man; Speak Up; How Many More; Group Economics; Education Reform; and Mentor.

Apart from this, the league will paint “Black Lives Matter” on the sidelines of all three courts it will use. This is in response to the claims of several players that the resumption of the 2019-20 season might serve as a distraction from the racial issues hounding the US.

“We're just trying to continue to shed light on the different social justice issues that guys around our league continue to talk about day in and day out,” Paul told The Undefeated. “People are saying that social justice will be off of everybody's mind in Orlando. With these jerseys, it doesn't go away.”

From the looks of it, this move will hit two birds with one stone. As for one, the 2019-20 season would have its proper closure to the delight of the fans. Second, the NBA will be utilizing its voice in support of the Black Lives Movement, hoping to affect change.

The Mavs' unified decision certainly is reflective of the statement choice.
