Dirk Nowitzki earlier this offseason inked a two-year, $10 million deal to remain with the Dallas Mavericks.

Despite inking a new contract, there are still questions being posed toward him concerning when his eventual retirement from the NBA. During a recent interview with Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated, Nowitzki openly discussed his hopes to fulfill the length of his commitment he made to the Mavericks:

“I signed on for two more, so hopefully I can play those two,” Nowitzki said. “Last year with the Achilles [injury], I missed almost two months. It was frustrating and disappointing. Hopefully, injury wise it will be a lot better this season and maybe I’ll play another one. We will see how it goes this [season]. We will see how the body feels.

Nowitzki had also hinted at this notion earlier this summer during the ESPYs when accepted the NBA's Best Teammate of the Year award. He is set to enter his 20th year in the league that has all been spent in Dallas.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said as much last month voicing that he hopes that the 39-year-old plays beyond this upcoming season as well. Nowitzki has been the face of the franchise for much of his career and has had a strong standing commitment and loyalty to the organization.

This may all hinge on his health come next offseason as he appears to still have the mental fortitude to grind through another NBA season or two if his body lets him. In the 2016-17 campaign, Nowitzki averaged 14.2 points along with 6.5 rebounds in 54 games played.
