The Dallas Mavericks could look to part ways with their defensive anchor and most prominent three-point shooter Wesley Matthews in the midst of another subpar season, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times.

Matthews has been a staple in the Mavs starting rotation, but with the trade deadline nearing, Dallas could look to deal him for a potential first-round pick in return.

The Mavericks are well out of playoff range with a 16-32 record, the fourth-worst in the league. Having suffered setbacks with the unforeseen injury to Seth Curry, the franchise is most likely to hone into the development of Dennis Smith Jr. as the point guard of the future and implementing Harrison Barnes as the torch carrier in a post-Dirk Nowitzki era.

Matthews, one of the first exemplar archetypes of a three-and-D wave of players, can certainly be a plug-and-play option in any rotation, especially on a winning team hoping to make a playoff push.

The Marquette marksman has played and started in all 48 games this season, as the third-leading scorer on the team — putting up averages of 12.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in his ninth season in the league.

At 31 years of age, Matthews is in the third of a four-year, $70 million contract, set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

Given the rising deal doled out in today's NBA, Matthews could make a nice addition or even a decent rental for a team needing one additional piece to their puzzle.
