The New York Mets have been among the clear winners early on in MLB Free Agency. Owner Steve Cohen opened up the wallet and splashed the cash in order to try to bring a World Series to Queens, and it's that thought process that helped him land some of the biggest names on the market.

The Mets' marquee offseason acquisition has been superstar ace Max Scherzer, who joins the franchise on a whopping three-year, $130 million deal. It was widely believed that Scherzer would be unwilling to join the Mets, with the common expectation being that he'd land with a West Coast team. Well, Cohen worked his magic and lured Scherzer to New York, and the three-time Cy Young award winner revealed what ultimately sealed the deal for him, via Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post.

“Steve [Cohen] said ‘whatever it takes to win here.' You don't hear that from owners too much these days. When you finally hear an owner say he wants to do what it takes to win, that obviously piqued my interest.”

While many owners insist that winning is their ultimate goal, none have been willing to make the big-money moves Cohen has over the past two years. His massive spending was all the evidence he needed to support his claim that he wanted to win by any means necessary, and clearly, he convinced Scherzer that Queens was the right place to end his career.

In addition to Scherzer, the Mets have doled out sizeable contracts to outfielders Mark Canha and Starling Marte, as well as Eduardo Escobar. The team's all-in approach is working out for them in the offseason, and now they'll need to transition that success into wins on the field.
