Shohei Ohtani has already changed baseball. But now his impact on the game is affecting the actual rules. MLB recently announced a number of new changes for the 2022 MLB season including one that is being dubbed as the “Shohei Ohtani Rule.”

This particular rule states that pitchers who opened the game as the DH can remain at DH even after being pulled from the game. Last season, the Angels ran into some issues because manager Joe Maddon knew that Ohtani had to be removed from the batting order once he was taken off the mound. But now they will be able to keep his bat in the lineup for the entirety of the game regardless of how long he pitches for.

But this Shohei Ohtani Rule was not the only new change announced for the 2022 MLB season.

Rosters will be expanded from 26 to 28 from the beginning of the season through May 1st. This is an effort to combat injuries since clubs had limited time to prepare for the season due to the lockout.

The extra inning rule will also remain intact this year. For those who may be unaware, this is a rule that automatically places a runner on second base in extra innings in an effort to speed up games. The player who is chosen to take second base is the final out from the previous inning.

But it is the Shohei Ohtani Rule that is currently taking the league by storm. This change will not only affect baseball’s future, but it should also add a number of wins for the Angels in 2022. Having Ohtani available to bat late in games on days he pitches is a major advantage for the team without question.
