After Major League Baseball was successful in running the “Field of Dreams” game where a match between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees was held outdoors, fans of the National Basketball Association might be clamoring for a similar version of basketball held outside. But NBA fans might want to wait a while for the “NBA Field of Dreams” to happen, according to the league itself.

Appearing on “The Crossover” podcast, NBA executive vice president of basketball strategy and analytics Evan Wasch said that the league was interested in a Field of Dreams-style game. However, there are certain logistical hurdles they have to figure out first. (via The Crossover)

“The biggest concern is the basketball one you highlight, that whether it’s blacktop and injury concerns or a wooden court outside with humidity concerns and moisture that can get on the court, being beholden to rain, all of those things become a consideration. We’ve explored it, and we’ll continue to talk about it,”

As much as avid fans want to see LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo duke it out in Rucker Park, or watch Stephen Curry light up Venice Beach, there are major issues that the NBA would have to address before going through with the games. It was easy for the MLB to do the “Field of Dreams” game because baseball is already inherently an outdoors game. The NBA, on the other hand, is an indoors game primarily. Factors that aren't normally taken into account in an NBA game (such as rain, wind, or humidity) need to be accounted for.

The Fields of Dreams game was a wildly successful venture for the MLB. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the NBA can figure out the logistics for this. And if the “NBA Field of Dreams” does happen, here's hoping Kevin Durant can recreate his iconic performance in Rucker Park ten years ago.
