According to a new report, the Big 12 conference is planning to allow teams in its conference to move ahead with a fall NCAA season despite the looming specter of COVID-19.

This bit of information came from SoonerScoop.com, a blog that covers all things Oklahoma University athletics as a part of the Rivals network.

Based on the report, a revised NCAA schedule will be released shortly. The said changed schedule is apparently already in the works, per Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.

“The Big 12 Presidents are wrapping up their call. The league is going to continue to pursue playing this season. A schedule, which was already prepared, will be released in the near future,” Thamel reported.

Unsurprisingly, NCAA football fans could be found in the comments of all these Tweets with a fairly joyous response to the return of Big 12 football and the teams that they’ve followed for years.

As the NBA and MLB continue to forge ahead in differing circumstances with their seasons (and postseason, in the NBA’s case), it will be interesting to see how the NCAA at large and each participating school in the Big 12 deals with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

The NBA’s highly enforced “bubble” policy does seem to be the best way, as no new cases have been reported in that league in a few weeks. Meanwhile, the far more lax MLB policies seem to be springing leaks – as a number of teams have reported multiple players contracting the virus.

Seeing as Big 12 football players are technically “student athletes,” this issue will likely be even more difficult to parse.
