Ben Simmons has yet to play for the Brooklyn Nets after being acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers in February for James Harden. His absence has left many wondering if he'll play at all this season as he continues to deal with back soreness following the ramping up of his conditioning.

In fact, he was aiming for a return on March 18th, but the pain persisted. At this point, it's very unclear if he'll suit up at all before the campaign is done.

More details from Shams Charania:

Simmons is dealing with a herniated disc in his back and although his return to action this season is uncertain, he wants to be back on the floor as soon as he can, sources tell The Athletic. Simmons, who had an epidural injection last week to relieve the soreness, has dealt with back issues dating back to February 2020 when he missed time due to a nerve impingement. As Nets general manager Sean Marks said recently, Simmons’ return this season has been delayed due to the back. Then, a target return of March 18 against the Portland Trail Blazers was missed as the back issues persisted.

This is very unfortunate for Simmons and the Nets, who are fighting tooth and nail to try and get into the top-six in the East and avoid the play-in tournament. With the Aussie on the floor with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, when he's actually allowed to play, this team would be scary. But, there is no sign of the 25-year-old Simmons making his Brooklyn debut anytime soon.

While this is unfortunate for the Nets, it's also concerning for his future. By the time he actually plays again if he doesn't return for the regular season or playoffs, it would be almost a year and a half since Simmons stepped on the hardwood. Of course, we know how that went.

Definitely frustrating for both sides.
