On a conference call with the media on Tuesday, Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash acknowledged that while both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are fully healthy, it's “probably unlikely” to expect either star to attempt to play the full 72-game season.

Durant has not yet made his debut with Brooklyn thanks to the Achilles injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals. The superstar has worked hard to return, but he won't know he's back for sure until he gets back out on the court in an NBA game.

Irving played in 20 games in his first season as a Net before suffering a season-ending right shoulder injury. He put up 27.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game on .478/.394/.922 shooting splits in 2019-20, though Brooklyn won just eight of those games.

Nash, the first-year head coach who was hired in September, said his coaching staff does not yet have a precise game plan for how Durant and Irving will be used in the first two preseason games next week.

Brooklyn will face the Washington Wizards on Sunday, Dec. 13 and the Boston Celtics on Friday, Dec. 18.

The Nets' first group practice is scheduled for this Sunday, Dec. 6.

On the court, it's unclear exactly how Nash and his staff will deploy Durant and Irving together. Durant's game is more tailored to thrive in an off-the-ball capacity, and Nash has previously stated that Durant will be used across multiple positions.

One major challenge for Nash will be how to integrate Durant (and Irving) with the supporting cast, particularly Caris LeVert and Spencer Dinwiddie — two highly capable scorers who like to operate with the ball in their hands. Fortunately, Brooklyn's depth should ease the load on the two stars coming off serious injuries.
