No fear. That's the motto the Green Bay Packers are taking right now. From the lips of the team's personnel boss to the media and eventually, to the entirety of Packers nation.
According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst is not worried about finding a backup quarterback for the franchise. That is, he's not worried right now, or yet.
“I don’t think I’m thinking out that far right now,” Gutekunst said last week, less than two months into his tenure as GM. “But yeah, I know what you’re saying.”
Remember, this is an ultra-spoiled fanbase as it relates to the ultra-critical quarterback position. After a horrid multi-decade span following the Bart Starr era, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers have carried the organization for nearly a quarter-century.
This team just doesn't know what it feels like to employ an average-to-good or poor quarterback.
“I’ll say this: It’s nice seeing the experience of going from one [quarterback] to the next, seeing that happen and the way it was handled,” Gutekunst said. “It’s nice being part of that.”
Rodgers' contract situation is the talk spearheading this conversation. The Super Bowl champ and two-time MVP has been the topic of much conversation since Jimmy Garoppolo received his big payday and Kirk Cousins is on the verge of his.
The 34-year-old stud signal-caller is under contract for two more seasons, but the Packers have repeatedly made mention to the narrative that their first priority is to make the man the league's highest-paid player.
For now, that remains the priority while Rodgers' potential replacement down the road will just have to stay in that area … “down the road.”
