The Green Bay Packers were rumored to be in on Stephon Gilmore, but he wound up getting traded to the Carolina Panthers. Now, NFL Network's Ian Rapaport says the Packers are trying to sign Jaylon Smith after his recent release from the Dallas Cowboys.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was at Notre Dame when Smith was there and is apparently a fan of the linebacker. Green Bay is looking to bolster its defense after some injuries.

There are reportedly several other teams in the mix.

The Cowboys released Smith on Tuesday after failing to trade him. Dallas drafted Smith in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He didn't play in 2016 but made his debut in 2017 and played in all 16 games each season from 2017-20. The linebacker made the Pro Bowl in 2019 and then set a career high in total tackles last season.

The Packers are 3-1 after their ugly loss to the New Orleans Saints to start the season. The vibes surrounding Aaron Rodgers and Co. are much better after all the offseason drama and that brutal Week 1 loss, and now Green Bay is simply trying to add more talent to the defense.
