The New Orleans Pelicans have been one of the most surprising teams this year. What started out as a mediocre year soon became even more disappointing when DeMarcus Cousins went down with a season-ending Achilles injury. However, many people have forgotten that Anthony Davis is still the Pelicans' franchise star.

He has been on a tear for the past month, leading his team to the seventh-best record in the Western Conference. In fact, with this superb play from Davis, the Pelicans could become a danger to the West's top teams who are likely looking to cruise during the first round of the postseason.

Though, after reflecting on his time with the Pelicans so far, Davis got very sentimental. He recently expressed that this year's team has been the closest groups he has ever been on, per Will Guillory of NOLA.com.

“We're very close. When (DeMarcus Cousins) went down, we had to become even more close because guys had to step up. This is probably one of the closest teams I've ever been on. I've said that from the summer time. These guys really like each other.”

Davis is a firm believer in his team. Even though he has not won a postseason round in his entire career, the former Kentucky Wildcat continues to dedicate himself to the franchise that drafted him back in 2012. As a matter of fact, Davis firmly believed that the Pelicans could have made the Finals if frontcourt mate Cousins was healthy, per ESPN’s Rachel Nichols.

“We could have gone through the playoffs. No one could really stop us as bigs. We go to the Finals if we went,” Davis told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols in an interview over All-Star weekend. “When he goes down, it’s, all right, it goes back to AD before DeMarcus, a lot of minutes, weight of the world on your shoulders,” Davis said. “You know, you gotta carry the team on your back, you gotta almost get 40 every night for us — to give us a chance to win.”

The Pelicans play the Mavericks on Sunday and there is a chance that Davis can put on another brilliant performance.
