The production company created to develop Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan’s books, Mythomagic, has released a statement on Threads saying that they currently do not have a deal in place with Disney for The Kane Chronicles.

“Development can mean lots of things. The whole point of our production company Mythomagic is to develop Rick’s books or other writing projects. Rick has discussed Kanes with Disney for years since the books were published especially as these books were US number one overall bestsellers when they were first published. No contracts currently are signed so until that happens there is no partnership with Disney+ on a film project to develop Kanes. Hopefully someday,” the post said.

No Kane Chronicles series adaptation… yet

Earlier in the year, Riordan answered a question posed to him on Goodreads about Netflix scrapping its plans to adapt the three-book series into feature films.

The author wrote, “Right now, Kane Chronicles is in ‘turnaround,’ which means Netflix has decided not to move forward and their option has lapsed after trying for two years to develop a script they liked. Now it depends on whether another studio would like to step in, assume the preproduction costs, and move forward.”

Since Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ first season enjoyed massive success on Disney+, fans assumed that the streaming platform would also take on Riordan’s other series.

And it might be a good fit for Disney+. The Kane Chronicles has three books: the first book is the title of the series, The Throne of Fire and The Serpent’s Shadow. Even better, Kane also has a crossover series with Percy Jackson, Demigods and Magicians has three short stories: The Son of Sobek, The Staff of Serapis and The Crown of Ptolemy.

Who are the Kanes?

The Kane Chronicles follow the adventures of the Kane siblings, Carter and Sadie. Since the death of their mother, they have become almost strangers to each other. Sadie was raised by her grandparents in London, while Carter traveled with their father, the renowned Egyptologist Dr. Julius Kane.

Their father brings them together in what he tells them is a research experiment at the British Museum, telling them he wants to set things right for their family. However, he ends up unleashing the Egyptian god Set who then banished Dr. Kane to oblivion which forces the siblings to run for their lives.

Since the first book already has a draft script written by Star Trek: Prodigy Diandra Pendleton-Thompson, it would be a lot easier for Disney to create a limited series. However, even with the success of Percy Jackson, Hollywood studios are tightening their belts.

“This is not at all unusual. It happens, I would guess, with the majority of film projects. Also, the streaming industry as a whole is shrinking their development slate right now, meaning they are cancelling more content and making less content. Kane got caught in that trend, despite the strong success of Percy TV,” Riordan said.

How about a cross over with Percy Jackson?

Still, it’s an idea worth mulling over. With Percy Jackson’s second season renewal, it’s been proven there’s appetite for well-written live-adaptation series for children and young adults. Or you know, people who’ve read the books. The Kane Chronicles could also satisfy those of us who moved on to Egyptian mythology after we devoured Greek and Roman.

Yes, Riordan has written a series based on Roman Mythology as well, The Heroes of Olympus, which also ties in with Percy Jackson. Or if you’re not into Egyptian or Roman mythology, there’s always Norse, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series.

See, plenty to choose from.
