The Philadelphia Eagles are set to take on the New England Patriots in their second preseason matchup on Thursday night. After a difficult campaign last year, the Eagles are hopeful for a much improves season. The coaching staff will have a busy evening, as they'll be evaluating the roster to generate the best possible lineup.

The defense was a concern last year, but the team is hopeful to improve in that area. New England will be a great test for the Eagles defensive unit, as the Patriots have a decent offense to compete with Philadelphia. Additionally, the Eagles offensive line was putrid a year ago. Thursday night's matchup should provide a glimpse into the Eagles' trenches this year.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles have a plethora of athletes ready to get to action. Miles Sanders will be the starter, but the backup role could be in a heated competition after Thursday night. At the same time, Philadelphia's wide receiver room seems to have stepped up. Look for a few receivers to stand out and make some plays for Philadelphia. With that said, here are four bold predictions for the Eagles preseason matchup against the Patriots.

4. The defense plays well

Defense was not a strong suit for the Eagles last year and they could find themselves near the bottom again. However, this team plays in a wide-open NFC East division. Philadelphia's defense doesn't have to be perfect, they just have to be average. Look for the defensive unit to make some plays on Thursday night, as they'll try their best to bother Mac Jones.

3. The offensive line shows improvement

It's no secret the Eagles struggled protecting the quarterback last season, but the coaching staff seems confident they'll improve. Jalen Hurts is a dual-threat running back, so that should help lessen the sack total. Facing off against the Patriots will be a great test for the Eagles' offensive line, as New England typically has a relatively strong defense. If the offensive line can play well in this game, it could prove the Eagles have much better protection up front this year.

2. Kenneth Gainwell shines

The lead role belongs to Miles Sanders, but Philadelphia has a plethora of capable running backs behind him. Kenneth Gainwell is a satellite back who should receive plenty of opportunities in the Eagles' second preseason game. His playstyle is similar to Boston Scott, so if Kenneth Gainwell can show off his talents, he could make a case to become the immediate backup behind Sanders.

1. The wide receiver core balls out

The Eagles receiving core could be much better than originally perceived. After having a disappointing rookie campaign, Jalen Reagor has been lights out throughout the offseason. Additionally, it appears as though Quez Watkins has made a leap in development as well. The front office also added DeVonta Smith in the NFL Draft, giving Philadelphia an athletic trio of wide receivers. Look for Jalen Reagor, Quez Watkins, and DeVonta Smith to potentially make a splash on Thursday night.
