Project Triangle Strategy (not the final title) is one of the hottest new titles to come out of the recent Nintendo Direct. Yet, it's not coming out until some unspecified time next year. This doesn't take any of our excitement, however. So let's pore over everything we know so far about Triangle Strategy together.

PROJECT TRIANGLE STRATEGY RELEASE DATE: TBD 2022

Project Triangle Strategy is a brand-new IP for the tried-and-tested Square Enix. For so long, fans have been clamoring for a follow-up to their cult-classic Final Fantasy Tacticsoriginally released on the PlayStation One. But even though we're not getting any new Final Fantasy Tactics game, Triangle Strategy is looking to take its place as the brand-new tactics RPG of choice.

Sadly, Triangle Strategy won't be out until next year, with a TBD 2022 release date. We're not even given any hints as to when in 2022, so it can be released in Winter 2022 for all we know.

NINTENDO SWITCH DEMO OUT NOW

Thankfully, Square Enix was kind enough to give us a demo, which is out now on the Nintendo eShop. The lengthy demo gives us a glimpse of what kind of game this will turn out to be. Its graphics are very reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, another hit Square Enix game on the Nintendo Switch. The gameplay feels like a modern adaptation of Final Fantasy Tactics. From what we've played so far, it's a gritty tale of politics and warfare. Mature audiences and fans of political intrigue will surely find their fill in this game.

Some fans have complained that the game feels a bit slow, however. Even with a speed-up function available, the game still feels sluggish. Some of the battles may also feel drawn-out and pointlessly long. Thankfully, they're taking a page out of the team who worked on Bravely Default 2. Following the same process, Square Enix released a playable demo when the game was unveiled to the public. Then, they will be using the feedback they get from the players who got the demo to refine the game.

Player feedback has been crucial in the development of Bravely Default 2, and it became a better game because of this open-ness by the developers. We hope to see the same dynamic here in Triangle Strategy.

THE STORY OF PROJECT TRIANGLE STRATEGY

The best things in life grow on threes, or so they say. If you haven't noticed yet, three is an important theme in Triangle Strategy. The political intrigue of the game follows three mighty powers in the continent of Norzelia: the Kingdom of Glenbrook, the Grand Duchy of Aesfrost, and the Holy State of Hyzante. Each of the three powers controls a vital resource, which has led to lots of conflicts, most notably the Saltiron War.

While the mutual destruction of the three powers brought an unstable peace, it would not last. The fragile truce was immediately broken when the newly-ascended Archduke Gustadolph of Aesfrost launched a surprise invasion of Glenbrook.

While the game lets the player take control of members of the Glenbrook aristocracy, it's also possible that we'd get to play as any of the three kingdoms, ala Brigandine or Fire Emblem Three Houses. This may seem the case since the demo starts at Chapter 6, which leaves a lot of possibility for the two other kingdoms to appear in other chapters.

HARNESS THE ELEMENTS AND BALANCE THE SCALES

Project Triangle Strategy introduces some neat new game mechanics in the tactics genre. There are simple stuff like backstabbing and flanking that add an additional layer of strategy. But the most major change involves using the elements and the terrain to your advantage. Ever wondered what will happen if you cast a fire magic spell on a grassy area? In Project Triangle Strategy, you can test that out yourself. You can harness the power of elements and affect the battlefield to turn the tide of the battle.

More importantly, you can also affect the course of the story based on your decisions you make in and out of the battlefield. Based on your decision-making, you affect the scales of the major guiding convictions in the game. Utility, Morality, and Liberty scales will be tipped by your decisions, which then leads to story beats and possibly side missions. Most importantly, your decisions can affect who survives this epic struggle between three powerful countries. Will you be able to lead your men to victory and to a life beyond wars? We'll find out when Project Triangle Strategy comes out this 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.
