The Los Angeles Rams chose to release Todd Gurley earlier this week and some of his teammates were confused by the move. Just a day after the move was made, Andrew Whitworth spoke about Los Angeles releasing Gurley:

“I think it’s tough,” Whitworth said via SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio. “Obviously, Todd’s dealt with some stuff over the last few years and a lot of pressure from the outside about his health. It’s been tough to see him have to go through that. I have the most respect for him. You list your all-time teammates, he’s definitely on that list. A great human being. A great football player . . . I’ve been with guys from all over the place and seen guys have success and seeing things like this, it’s tough. One of your teammates, you lose one that means so much to you.”

Following his release, Gurley reached an agreement with the Atlanta Falcons on Friday. As Whitworth exclaimed, Gurley has been dealing with questions surrounding his knee for the past two years.

This past season with the Rams, Gurley finished with a career-low in rushing yards and was visibly distraught when being asked questions pertaining to his knee. Therefore, before his new contract even kicked in, Los Angeles was inclined to move on from the two-time All-Pro.

Before Gurley was released, Whitworth was able to negotiate a new three-year deal with Los Angeles. The veteran left tackle joined the Rams in 2017 and has been creating running lanes for Gurley for three straight seasons, which included a Super Bowl appearance in 2019.

While Whitworth is excited to continue his career with the Rams, he realizes how tough it is to lose a player and teammate like Gurley. Nevertheless, Whitworth will have a new starting running back running behind him in 2020 with the Rams.
