Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips may not return next season, according to Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Marvez notes that Phillips will meet with head coach Sean McVay at the end of the season to discuss his future. Should Phillips go, linebackers coach Joe Barry is viewed as a potential replacement.

Whether or not Phillips is considering leaving on his own volition or if the Rams may want to make a change is unclear.

Widely regarded as one of the best defensive minds in football, Phillips took over as Los Angeles' defensive guru in 2017. The Rams finished 17th in defense during his first season and 19th last year.

Through 14 games in 2019, LA ranks a respectable 12th in the NFL in yards allowed.

While the Rams' defensive numbers may not look terrific under Phillips, they have also not had a ton of talent on that side of the ball outside of Aaron Donald.

As a result, Phillips has been lauded for the job he has done in Los Angeles, and he has a shining track record as a defensive play-caller overall.

Phillips landed his first NFL job back in 1976, when he served as defensive line coach for the Houston Oilers for five seasons. He has had a few head-coaching stops along the way, most notably with the Dallas Cowboys from 2007 through mid-2010, but he is most known for his defensive genius.

In terms of his most recent success, the 72-year-old was the mastermind behind the Denver Broncos' dominant, Super Bowl-winning defense in 2015.

The Rams have been a disappointment overall this season, as they have gone just 8-6 and are seeing their playoff hopes on life support with just two games left to play.
