The Tampa Bay Rays have made a trade offer for New York Mets right-handed starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com. However, the sides are not yet close on a deal.

Through 20 starts this season, Wheeler has gone 7-6 with a 4.71 ERA while allowing 124 hits and striking out 137 batters over 124.1 innings of work. His 3.65 FIP also indicates he has been a bit unlucky.

Still, in spite of the fact that Wheeler has talent, there is a whole lot to be concerned with.

The 29-year-old has had a heck of a time staying healthy throughout his career, as he missed two whole seasons in 2015 and 2016 due to elbow issues and then threw just 86.1 innings in 2017.

As a matter of fact, 2018 represented Wheeler's first truly healthy season with the Mets since 2014, as he made 29 starts and went 12-7 with a 3.31 ERA, surrendering 150 hits while fanning 179 hitters across 182.1 frames of action.

Wheeler was originally selected by the San Francisco Giants with the sixth overall pick of the 2009 MLB Draft, but he never actually played for the San Francisco Giants' major-league club before being dealt to the Mets for Carlos Beltran in July 2011.

He went on to make his big-league debut in New York in 2013, going 7-5 with a 3.42 ERA while giving up 90 hits and registering 84 punch-outs through 100 innings.

Overall, Wheeler has gone 40-36 with a 3.89 ERA over the course of his career.

The Smyrna, Ga. native will also be a free agent at the end of the season, which will almost certainly limit how much the Mets can get back in a trade for the righty.
