The Boston Red Sox' 2022 campaign has been… well, not good, to say the least. After making it to the ALCS last season, the team has seemingly fallen off of a cliff. They sit at a terrible 13-21 record. It's early in the season, but it's safe to say that starting off like that isn't a good sign.

Compounding the Red Sox woes is Xander Bogaerts' contract extension talks. The slugger initially refused to sign an extension before the start of the season. It was thought at the time that the talks would resume at the end of the season. Recently, though, it seemed like Bogaerts had a change of mind. (via Peter Abraham)

“I don’t know how this would work. But if they talk to [agent Scott Boras] behind closed doors and it’s something that’s fair, he can come to me. We’ll see how that goes.”

MLB stars typically don't negotiate contract extensions in the middle of the season. Many stars, including Bogaerts, do this in order to avoid any distractions from a long season. However, based on how the Red Sox star worded his statement, it seems like he'll have more of a hands-off approach to these talks.

The Red Sox hopefully are able to regain their previous form from last season. They went toe-to-toe against the Houston Astros… and yet, this season, they sit at the bottom of their division. With so many good teams above them, coming back might prove to be a challenge too difficult for Bogaerts and co. to overcome.
