Over the past few weeks, the Sacramento Kings and Rudy Gay have seemed to be on an inevitable path of separation.

Gay became vocal about his uneasiness towards the direction of the franchise, but team official Vlade Divac has since cleared the air with their starting small forward. However, that doesn’t mean a split is out of the question.

According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, the market for Rudy Gay’s services isn’t shallow, especially with a Western force interested in his services.

The next hurdle is value. League sources say while there are teams that have expressed interest in Gay – most notably the Houston Rockets – getting anything of real value back on what could be a one-year rental at Gay’s price tag is hard math to make work.

As with everyone, Gay would surely be a prolific contributor in coach Mike D’Antoni’s offense, and a potential team up with All Star guard James Harden is an exciting scenario for Houston fans.

But there is a kicker. Gay is owed $13 million this year and he has the power to hit the open market next summer, if he chooses to, which is very likely considering the significant increase in players’ salaries nowadays.

Interestingly enough, it was Houston who drafted Rudy Gay as the 8th overall pick in the 2006 draft, before trading him to the Memphis Grizzlies.
