Daniil Medvedev has had a wild day. On a personal level, Thursday has been one of the best moments of his life: Novak Djokovic's loss in Dubai meant he was guaranteed to be the No. 1 player in the ATP. However, his home country of Russia is mired in conflict, as they have invaded Ukraine.

After beating Japanese star Yoshihito Nishioka to advance to the semi-finals of the Mexico Open, Daniil Medvedev opened up about his thoughts on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Russian star admitted that hearing about the news was not easy, saying: (via Associated Press)

“Watching the news from home, waking up here in Mexico, was not easy. By being a tennis player, I want to promote peace all over the world. We play in so many different countries; I’ve been in so many countries as a junior and as a pro. It’s just not easy to hear all this news. … I’m all for peace.”

Daniil Medvedev has been considered one of the best tennis players of this era. Just last year, he challenged Djokovic during the US Open Final. The Russian superstar stopped Djokovic's bid to win all four Grand Slam events in a calendar year, shutting down the Serbian phenom's outstanding year.

Now, just as Medvedev is continuing his ascent into tennis greatness, this conflict between Russia and Ukraine emerges. It all started when the Russian military started a sudden invasion of Ukraine, citing a need to protect Russian-speakers in the latter country. The invasion has clearly affected the Russian star, who was in Mexico when it all started.
