After some brutal years in recent memory, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team is off to a 3-0 start this season. A big reason for that has been the return of Greg Schiano as the head coach in 2020.

Rutgers has largely done it with the defense so far this year and now, they'll be without starting cornerback Malachi Melton and reserve corner Chris Long, per 247sports.com.

“I was informed that Chris Long and Malachi Melton were taken into police custody early this morning as a result of an incident involving a paint ball gun. Both players have been suspended immediately.” – Greg Schiano.

Melton has been a key piece to the puzzle for the Rutgers defense so far this year. In their Week 2 contest against Syracuse he blocked a punt, recovered a fumble and had an interception. For the immediate future, Rutgers will have to work without him in the mix. It was just on Monday that Schiano was asked about Melton and praised his play for Rutgers so far this year.

“We sure are blessed to have Max,” Schiano said. ” He is a really good player. He is a tremendous competitor. This guy wants to win every single thing he does. He approaches practice like that and he goes and plays that way. I really think he is a very good corner and he is getting better every day. He is still a young guy.  What's he played, 12 college games. It is the equivalency of one season. I think he can really become a great one if he just continues to work the way he is.”

Rutgers has a big time matchup this Saturday at No. 19 Michigan that could shake up the college football top 25 rankings.
