One of the hallmark organizations in the NBA, the Philadelphia 76ers have been home to some of the greatest basketball players of all time. Sixers fans can mostly thank the front office for that.

Since becoming an NBA franchise all the way back in 1949, the Sixers have a history of making sound decisions in the draft, trades, and in signing free agents.

For this piece, we'll be focusing on the notable free-agent signings the Sixers have made over the course of time.

August 29, 1973

The Sixers sign Steve Mix as a free agent. The swingman made his lone All-Star team while playing for Philadelphia. That came in 1975.

Mix averaged 11.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 668 games with the franchise.

July 10, 1975

Hall of Famer George McGinnis joined the Sixers after a decorated ABA career with the Indiana Pacers. He appeared in 234 games with the Sixers and put up 21.6 points, 11.5 boards and 4.1 assists.

McGinnis was named a Hall of Famer in 2017.

January 31, 1986

The Sixers signed Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo for the stretch run of the 1985-86 season. He played in 29 games and averaged 10.1 points and 3.6 rebounds before calling it a career.

August 12, 1993

Moses Malone joined the Sixers for his second stint with the club. The NBA legend put up 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds during the 1993-94 season while playing in 55 games.

September 16, 1999

The Sixers signed Bruce Bowen. He played in just 42 games with the team before getting traded to the Chicago Bulls.

Bowen, of course, won three championships later on with the San Antonio Spurs.

July 9, 2008

Elton Brand, who is currently the general manager of the Sixers, signed with Philly after seven years with the Los Angeles Clippers. The former No. 1 overall pick averaged 13.3 points and 7.4 rebounds from 2009 to 2012.

December 2, 2009

The best player in franchise history, Allen Iverson returned to Philadelphia after playing just three games with the Grizzlies.

AI played in 25 games during the 2009-10 campaign before calling it a Hall of Fame career.

November 15, 2014

The Sixers picked up Robert Covington and watched him become one of the best 3-and-D players in the NBA.

RoCo put up 12.9 points while shooting 35.9 percent from beyond the arc in 297 games with the franchise before getting traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Jimmy Butler deal.

July 8, 2017

The 76ers stole J.J. Redick away from the Los Angeles Clippers. The sharpshooter played two seasons in Philadelphia and averaged 17.6 points while shooting 40.7 percent from deep.

July 10, 2019

The Sixers signed Al Horford away from the Boston Celtics. The All-Star averaged 11.9 points and 6.8 rebounds in 2019-20. The veteran big man once again headlined Sixers news when he got traded in the 2020 offseason to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a package that got them Danny Green in return.
