San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has been very outspoken on social and political issues throughout his time as head coach, and today is no exception.

Prior to tonight's game against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Spurs coach had his first opportunity to speak about the invasion of the Capitol Building yesterday, and he didn't hold back.

“I don't know. … I think I'm just embarrassed as a white person to know that that can happen,” Popovich said, via ESPN. “To actually watch a lynching. We've all seen books, and you look in the books and you see black people hanging off of trees. And you … are amazed. But we just saw it again. I never thought I'd see that, with my own eyes, in real time.”

Many around the country have made comparisons between what happened yesterday and the response by various authorities to how the protests by Black Lives Matter and other groups were handled. Many have analyzed this as further proof of white privilege and the systemic racism that still grips the country.

Popovich is well known for his outspokenness on issues like these. He was one of many in the NBA to speak out on George Floyd's death along with other social justice issues over the years. He has been one of the few voices that hold such weight on issues such as these.

Outside of Gregg Popovich, others who have also spoken out on yesterday's events include Doc Rivers and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Furthermore, the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, among others, kneeled following the opening tip last night in protest of the events.
