Hall of Fame point guard and Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson congratulated Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul after CP3 passed him on the all-time assists list.

Johnson dedicated most of his message to hailing Paul as a businessman and father, as well as one of the greatest guards in NBA history:

“Congratulations to @CP3 for passing me & becoming the number 5 all-time assist leader!!” Johnson tweeted. “I’m so happy for him! He’s become such an astute businessman & I love his commercials with his kids. A great husband & father, I wish you nothing but success in your life. God bless you!”

Paul moved past Magic after racking up 13 dimes in the Suns Monday night win over the Milwaukee Bucks. He is all but guaranteed to move into the top three of the all-time list before the end of his career.

The “Point God” has been one of the very best assist men practically since he first came into the NBA in 2005. He has led the league in assists per game in four different seasons and has averaged double-digit assists seven times in his career. His 9.43 assists per game rank fourth all-time. Now Paul is leading a Suns team looking for a top seed in the Western Conference.

The Suns' point guard responded to Magic Johnson, appreciating Magic for “setting the bar.”

Paul has built an exceptional resume as one of the greatest point guards in league history. The only thing missing is a championship ring. Can he lead the Suns to a title?

The 35-year-old has inspired this Phoenix team after the Suns acquired him in a blockbuster trade this past offseason. He has the Suns just 1.5 games out of the top seed in the Western Conference, galvanizing their team defense and offering tremendous leadership and production at the point guard spot.

Paul has caught Johnson on the all-time assists list. But he surely wants what Magic has plenty of and that is an NBA title. Perhaps he will get that with the Suns.
