According to NBA.com, the Phoenix Suns are waiving Eric Moreland after signing the big man on Dec. 10. Moreland appeared in one game for the Suns, grabbing three rebounds and failing to score a single point. Moreland was cut in an effort to save money, but by waiving him, the Suns add to their dead cap space per Bobby Marks of ESPN. Marks writes:

“The roster in Phoenix now drops to 13 players after the waiver of Eric Moreland. The Suns had up until Jan. 7 to guarantee the $1M contract and will incur a $239K cap hit. Phoenix now has $33M in dead cap space, close to half of the amount of guaranteed salary on the roster.”

That's not a great look for Phoenix. Dead cap space can be useful for teams who are looking to escape bad contracts without destroying their salary cap. Unfortunately, the Suns' dead cap space is nearly half their guaranteed salary on the roster.

Of course, things aren't all bad in Phoenix. Shooting guard Devin Booker is taking another leap forward this year and rookie center Deandre Ayton is in the running for Rookie of the Year through nearly half the season.

Suns have been mismanaged for some time and they haven't gone to the playoffs since 2010. That being said, they have some young pieces in place and another pick in next year's top-heavy draft. They may need some luck to land one of the coveted top picks, but a top choice could position the Suns to draft a third star to add to Booker and Ayton.

The Suns' situation is not desirable, but it's not a death sentence either.
