Rookies and other young players often end up making silly and unforeseen mistakes. Unfortunately for Phoenix Suns rookie Deandre Ayton, his time to not shine was Thursday night against the Dallas Mavericks.

As creatures of habit, you can't do anything but feel bad for Ayton. He steps into the free throw as if it was a one-and-one and he was back at the University of Arizona:

Though he made that mistake, Ayton has been a steady name in the Rookie of the Year race all season long after going No. 1 overall.

Ayton has proven lethal offensively in the pick-and-roll with Devin Booker, averaging 15.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists a game while shooting 59.8 percent from the field.

Ayton's ability to be a rim-runner and dominate with sheer strength against other bigs in the post has been on display nightly. Even though he sometimes finds himself making the wrong reads defensively, his size and length alone disrupt shots in the paint.

Booker has been another bright side for the Suns, when healthy at least, averaging 23.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game while shooting 43.9 percent from the field.

Booker become the Suns' de facto primary ball-handler thanks to the lack of a point guard. He's quick off the dribble and has a variety of finishes with both hands going at the basket. He has a strong pull-up game that he goes to consistently. The 3-point shot needs more consistency, but he needs an actual playmaker alongside with him for those percentages to rise.

Recently, the Suns have made national waves for their owner allegedly threatening to move the team to Seattle or Las Vegas if he doesn't get the public funding he desires. Though it has been shot down and refuted by the organization, worry still remains.

The Suns are 5-24 on the season and last in the NBA’s Western Conference. They play next against the Minnesota Timberwolves at home Saturday evening.
