The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired former Detroit Pistons assistant general manager Sachin Gupta to become their new executive vice president of basketball operations, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Gupta will be second in the chain of command of a front office led by the newly-hired president Gersson Rosas. The two worked together during their stint with the Houston Rockets.

This hiring puts in question the position of general manager Scott Layden, though most expect him to stay onboard under his current role, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

Rosas has been putting in the work since being hired to lead the Timberwolves front office earlier this month, doing his due diligence by organizing a coaching search and soon after removing the interim title from coach Ryan Saunders, entrusting him with this roster ahead of the NBA Draft.

Gupta's hiring will bring in a familiar face for Rosas to work next to, giving him a sense of stability and connection to help him run this franchise for the foreseeable future.

Gupta's reputation in the league is more than eyes let on, as he worked under Sam Hinkie with the Philadelphia 76ers, under Daryl Morey in Houston and literally invented the famous ESPN trade machine, according to Krawczynski — making him the perfect fit for Rosas' “question the norm” mantra.
